Art Workshops for Young Musicians (7-12yrs) Self expression is the essential part of being an instrumentalist yet amongst the daily tasks of note learning, technique building and working towards exams there is little time for young musicians to explore their emotional relationship with their musical instrument. In this series of fun and educational workshops, children will learn to work with and channel their core feelings through a diverse and stimulating range of creative mediums, including puppetry, mask making, clay sculpting, painting, drawing, musical improvisation, and composition. The series aims to develop an awareness that at the source of all true creativity is an innate desire to express ones self. By understanding that notes and music are simply the vehicles through which one communicates feelings, there is a shift in focus which leads to an increased maturity and joy in playing. The instrument, music, player and audience become one, connected by a deeper language. The Workshop Series 1 Story Telling through Musical Puppet Theatre (for details of this Workshop click here) Working with a simple story, we will explore core moods through puppet making, mask making, theatre building, musical improvisation and performance. 2 Musical Moods and Expressive Sculpture Using many different styles of music as inspiration, we will explore the diverse moods they evoke with clay to create an expressive sculpture exhibition. 3 Junk Instruments and Sound Painting We will learn about the sounds and shapes of instruments of the orchestra by making them out of junk, and work with colour and line to illustrate their different tones and expressive characters. There will be a junk concert at the end. 4 Music, Dance and Line Using live and recorded music we will express our responses with improvised dancing and movement. The vitality of the rhythms, melodies and movement will then be explored using texture, line, colour and fluidity in expressive figure drawing and painting. 5 Improvisation and Composition to Poetry Improvising with rhythm and melody on different instruments, and working with musical moods, we will compose, record and perform short pieces to illustrate a series of poems. 6 Self Expression through your Musical Instrument Bring your instrument and we will make a story about a piece of music, animate it through drawing, painting and story telling, and learn dynamic musical expression through, energy shaping, volume and tone production.
