John Hunter

Alexander Technique Teacher

John Hunter is an experienced teacher of the Technique who has been studying the ideas of F. M. Alexander since 1978 and teaching them since 1984.  In addition to completing a STAT approved 3 year teacher-training course he has studied extensively with several of the “first generation” teachers taught by Alexander himself.

Soon after qualifying John was invited to teach at the Royal Academy of Music. There, during the course of twenty years, he gained considerable experience in teaching the principles and practice of Alexander’s ideas to musicians, and in dealing with the particular difficulties and problems which can arise in relation to particular instruments and to the voice.

Currently a large part of John’s work involves running courses for teachers, which he has done in Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Finland.

In 1993 he opened the Westminster Alexander Centre in Covent Garden and in 2005 initiated an International Summer School for the Alexander Technique.

John has been involved in running STAT, the professional body for Alexander Teachers (the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique), serving on its Council from 1985-1996 and as its Chair from 1989-1992. He is also a Trustee of The Charity for the F Matthias Alexander Technique.
